Coffee Basics

Coffee doesn’t have to be complicated.

Whether you’re just getting started or looking to upgrade your daily cup, this guide will help you understand the basics, so you can choose coffee you’ll actually enjoy.

🌱 What Coffee Actually Is

Coffee starts as a fruit.

Inside each coffee cherry are seeds—these are the beans we roast and brew.

What affects the taste:

  • Where it’s grown (origin)
  • How it’s processed
  • How it’s roasted
  • How you brew it

👉 Same plant, completely different flavors.

🌍 Arabica vs Robusta (Keep it simple)

Most coffee falls into two types:

Arabica

  • Smoother, more complex
  • Notes: fruity, sweet, balanced
  • Higher quality (what we use)

Robusta

  • Stronger, more bitter
  • Higher caffeine
  • Often used in commercial blends

🏷️ How to Read a Coffee Label

When you see a bag of coffee, here’s what matters:

Origin
Where it’s from (e.g. Ethiopia, Colombia)
→ Affects flavor most

Tasting Notes
Natural flavors (not added!)
→ Chocolate, citrus, berries, nuts

Process
How the bean was handled after harvest
→ Washed (clean), Natural (fruity), Honey (sweet)

Roast Level
Light / Medium / Dark
→ Changes body and flavor

🔥 Roast Levels (Quick Guide)

Light Roast

  • Bright, fruity, higher acidity
  • Best for filter / pour over

Medium Roast

  • Balanced, smooth
  • Great all-rounder

Dark Roast

  • Bold, rich, more bitter
  • Best for espresso & milk drinks

👉 Dark roast ≠ stronger caffeine (common myth)

😋 Understanding Taste (Without the Confusion)

Coffee isn’t just “strong” or “weak.”

Here’s what you’re actually tasting:

  • Acidity → Bright, lively (like citrus)
  • Body → Light vs heavy mouthfeel
  • Sweetness → Caramel, chocolate notes
  • Bitterness → More in darker roasts

👉 If you like chocolate → go for Brazil
👉 If you like fruity → try Ethiopia

⚙️ Brew Method Matters

The same coffee can taste completely different depending on how you brew it.

Quick examples:

  • French Press → bold, heavy
  • Pour Over (V60) → clean, bright
  • Espresso → intense, concentrated

🧂 Freshness & Grind (Game Changer)

Two things that instantly improve your coffee:

1. Fresh coffee matters

  • Best within 2–4 weeks of roasting

2. Grind size matters

  • Too fine → bitter
  • Too coarse → weak

👉 Match grind to your brew method

🧠 Common Myths (Quick Wins)

  • “Dark roast has more caffeine” → ❌
  • “Coffee is naturally bitter” → ❌
  • “Espresso beans are different beans” → ❌

🎯 How to Choose Your Coffee
